    Before we dive into all the natural remedies, let’s get a better understanding of inflammation and its causes. 

    Inflammation is the body’s response to injury, infection, or tissue damage. It manifests as redness, swelling, heat, and pain. 

    Common causes of inflammation include chronic stress (THIS IS ME), poor diet (or eating things that you may not know are inflammatory/reactive for you), sedentary lifestyle, environmental factors, and autoimmune disorders. By addressing the root causes of inflammation, we can effectively manage its symptoms and support our overall health.

    Skin Rashes and Hives as Signs of Inflammation

    Skin rashes and hives are commonly associated with inflammation and can serve as visible indicators of an inflammatory response in the body. Inflammation is the body’s way of responding to an injury or irritation and involves the release of chemicals that cause swelling, redness, heat, and pain. When this response happens in the skin, it causes rashes and hives to appear.

     

    These skin conditions often arise due to various triggers, including allergic reactions, infections, or autoimmune disorders, all of which can lead to an inflammatory response in the skin. Inflammation can cause the blood vessels in the affected area to dilate, resulting in redness, swelling, itching, and the formation of hives or raised skin rashes. 

    If you notice persistent or recurring skin rashes or hives, it is important to seek medical attention to determine the underlying cause of the inflammation and develop an appropriate treatment plan to address both the skin condition and the inflammation.

    How to Deal With Skin Rashes, Hives and Breakouts as a Result of Inflammation.

    When it comes to addressing skin rashes, bumps, and hives associated with inflammation, a multifaceted approach can provide relief and promote healing. 

    Firstly, identifying and avoiding potential triggers is crucial. This may involve keeping a diary to track any potential allergens or irritants that could be causing the skin reactions. Additionally, applying cool compresses or taking cool baths can help soothe the affected area and reduce inflammation. Using gentle, fragrance-free, and hypoallergenic skincare products can minimize further irritation. 

    Calming ingredients such as aloe vera gel, chamomile, or oatmeal baths can also provide relief. Over-the-counter antihistamines may help alleviate itching and reduce the allergic response. However, if the skin rash, bumps, or hives persist, worsen, or are accompanied by severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face and throat, seeking medical attention is essential, as it could indicate a more serious allergic reaction or underlying condition. A healthcare professional can assess the situation, prescribe appropriate medications if necessary, and provide guidance on managing skin rashes, bumps, and hives associated with inflammation effectively. 

    Something else to consider is taking a food reactivity test. I discovered that many times when I’d get an outbreak of skin bumps it was due to consumption of corn, which I now know is highly reactive and inflammatory for me, as is too much dairy and gluten. Food can be medicine and the REMOVAL OF FOOD can also be medicine. 

    Glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid derived from sugarcane, is renowned for its exfoliating and skin-renewing properties, making it an effective ingredient for addressing various skin issues associated with inflammation. This powerful acid works by gently dissolving dead skin cells and unclogging pores, which can be beneficial for conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation, and rough, uneven skin texture that may arise from inflammation. Glycolic acid also stimulates collagen production, promoting skin elasticity and firmness. Incorporating skincare products formulated with glycolic acid, such as cleansers, toners, serums, or moisturizers, can help improve the appearance of inflamed skin by reducing redness, refining skin texture, and promoting a more even skin tone. 

    It’s important to start with lower concentrations and gradually increase usage to allow the skin to acclimate.     Having had to take many OTC medications including NSAIDs for many years of my adult life, I can tell you that while they may provide short term relief, they absolutely cause other health problems that are usually far worse to address.

These herbs can be incorporated into daily routines through teas, adding them to meals, or taking them as supplements. Experimenting with different herbal remedies can help you find what works best for your body AND which ones you prefer.

To incorporate turmeric into your routine and harness its benefits, there are several options available. One popular method is to use turmeric powder in cooking. Add a teaspoon or two of turmeric powder to curries, soups, stews, or stir-fried vegetables to infuse your meals with its vibrant color and earthy flavor. Another option is to make a warming turmeric tea by combining hot water, a teaspoon of turmeric powder, a pinch of black pepper (which enhances curcumin absorption), and a squeeze of lemon or a dash of honey for taste. 

    I personally LOVE making a “Turmeric Latte” (sometimes called a Golden Latte) using almond milk and I add extra cinnamon. So good. 

    You can also find turmeric supplements in capsule or liquid form, which provide a concentrated dose of curcumin.     IMPORTANT! Do not make the mistake I did when I first bought essential oils and think you can just apply them to the skin anywhere in any way! LOL. I’ll never forget being told about peppermint oil helping to relieve headache pain. I had a banger headache and my eyes were throbbing. I put peppermint oil ON MY EYELIDS– OMG!!!!!! I was stinging for hours. Hours! Now I get why they say use a carrier oil! 

    Topical application of essential oils can provide targeted relief for localized inflammation. Before applying essential oils to your skin, it’s crucial to dilute them with a carrier oil to prevent skin irritation or sensitization. Common carrier oils include jojoba oil, coconut oil, almond oil, or olive oil. To create a diluted blend, add a few drops of essential oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil and mix well. Gently massage the diluted mixture onto the affected area, allowing the skin to absorb the oils. 

    You can also create a soothing compress by adding a few drops of essential oil to a bowl of warm water, soaking a clean cloth or towel in the mixture, and applying it to the inflamed area. I wrote this blog post for those of you who may be like I was– not KNOWING that the “stuff” that was going on with my body from skin bumps and hives to gaining inches FAST – way too fast to be weight gain (inflammation related to too much dairy– I cut dairy and lost almost 3 inches in a week!!) to headaches to joint pain for no reason– it was all inflammation and could all get better — if I took better CARE OF MYSELF!

    Are you struggling with hormonal acne? Want to find out how to deal with hormonal acne without wasting time and money? I’ve got you. I’ve dealt with acne and skin issues my whole adult life. I have recently discovered new techniques and products that helped me figure out how to deal with hormonal acne in an effective way. The approaches will likely vary for each person and you have to test things out, but it’s worth it. When you have hormonal acne as an adult, it can cause massive stress and anxiety– ain’t nobody got time for that. Read on to learn more about how to deal with hormonal acne and let me know what worked for you!

    My Top 10 Tips to Help Treat Hormonal Acne

    As I mentioned above, I have dealt with acne most of my adult life. I started getting bad breakouts in college and went on accutane several times and then I was put on the Pill and it’s likely that that was keeping my hormones altered for a while. (HINT: do NOT use the PILL or Accutane for acne!!! They are dangerous drugs and set you up for disaster later!! Trust me– same goes for Spironolactone: do not believe the hype from a lot of dermatologists that it’s a “miracle drug”– it’s a testosterone blocker that will block your testosterone sure but that’s going to jack your hormones and again, set you up for. a world of problems and health issues later!!) Later in my life, around the time I was going through my divorce, I came down with another skin problem that continues to plague me to this day. I broke out in bumps– not exactly pimples but more like mosquito bite size bumps that are hard and painful – all over my neck, then chest back and upper arms and often, on my face. For YEARS and YEARS I went to doctors and dermatologists and no one could figure out what this situation was. It was because of this ongoing skin bump situation that I have learned so much about adult acne and other skin conditions. As you’ll learn in the video below, my skin bump condition turned out to be more of an inflammatory response to — my body reacting to CORN. Corn! I can’t eat corn or products with corn in it or I break out in bumps– and I’ve recently learned that BANANAS cause the same reaction. Yes my friends, FOOD can medicine, but the REMOVAL OF FOOD can also be medicine. I’ll talk about that more down below. 

    What I’ve learned are some of the best practices to dealing with hormonal acne or skin conditions like mine are listed below. I promise you each one is more impactful than you think, so don’t underestimate the effect it can have!! Trust me, I’ve been down this road a while.

    1) As stated above: when you experience chronic adult acne or any kind of rashes/bumps like I have, CONSIDER YOUR DIET. Now, let me be clear. This is not always easy but you could start with ( depending on how serious you are to get better skin ) eliminating DAIRY and/or GLUTEN. If you think you can’t do it, don’t go there. You may or may not know I went keto and stayed 100% keto for about 16 months and there are legions of great tasting foods that contain no gluten and no dairy. I never thought I could do keto and I did- give yourself more credit. You can also do what I did and take a food reactivity test, that helped me figure out the root of my problem when nothing else seemed to work. I recommend the MRT LEAP TEST by Oxford Labs. Life changing! Also, I’ve recently started using a Lumen to track and monitor how my body is utilizing carbs vs. fat. I’m really excited to see how this unfolds over time especially since I’ve added carbs back into my life and have definitely noticed that they have an effect on me and that I’ll have to watch my intake of them for the rest of my life. (See my posts on insulin resistance and going keto). The Lumen advises you on how to alter your diet if you tend to be burning carbs more often than fat, I’m digging that. I’m also going to start using a CGM again so stay tuned for more information on that. Consider picking up a Lumen for yourself this year, you are worth the investment!

    2) Watch your blood sugar/glucose. Yes — more food/diet talk. As I did some more research recently on this topic (as I was discovering that my recent breakout of bumps was not “stress” but actually my body reacting to BANANAS!! Then I learned that bananas are often problematic because they are ‘histamine liberators‘ or can cause your body to release histamine which can result in a legion of side effects. If you want to read an outstanding book on regulating your glucose , you must get The Glucose Revolution!! Great read with some awesome lifestyle tips to make it easier to eat foods you enjoy while keeping your glucose in check. The research I’ve been doing on keeping your skin clear of adult acne talks repeatedly about how high insulin, high blood sugar and a diet rich in carbs/processed food and sugar is likely to cause breakouts in many women. 

    3) Don’t over wash your face. The tendency to over-scrub, over-exfoliate and over-wash your face when you are broken out is natural but it’s the worst thing you can be doing. Be gentle to your skin-  beating it up with too much washing and exfoliating can make your skin condition worse. Try using these gentle makeup remover wipes, over 10K 5 star reviews on Amazon can’t be wrong!

    4) Clean your makeup brushes REGULARLY!! I recommend weekly. Ever since I made the switch to cream makeup (life changing, you must order some and you’ll be obsessed! I’ve relied on makeup brushes to apply this fabulous cream foundation and do my contouring more than ever. And now I make sure that I religiously wash my brushes every Saturday morning– otherwise ladies you are just shoving bacteria on your skin–do you really want to add that to your already broken out face? I think not. (p.s. I use our Seint makeup brush cleaner, you can order from me)

    5) HYDRATE. HYDRATE. HYDRATE. Water consumption is the key to everything and it’s also the key for supple healthy skin. I don’t think I need to explain much more here but I can tell you my skin gets super dry when I’m not drinking enough water and that can cause breakouts: when you skin gets super dry, it will produce excess oil/sebum to accommodate and then your pores will clog and zits will occur. Ugh. Drink up. You know what has helped me finally get over my ISSUES drinking enough water? Getting this 33oz Iron Flask! For real! I carry it with me everywhere and now I drink 2-3 of these a day (my neurologist told me to!) and I am now a crazy water drinking fool. They come in all sizes and colors: do yourself a favor and pick one up now. 

    6) Change your pillowcase to a silk/satin one and change it REGULARLY. Hopefully you wash your sheets at minimum weekly but changing your pillowcase can be a gamechanger! This is where your face rests for 8 or so hours every night– you want that pillowcase to be soft and gentle and CLEAN to avoid bacteria buildup!

    7) Always remove your makeup before bed!! Seriously ladies! And take this evening skincare routine up a notch — a makeup remover wipe is NOT considered washing your face. I learned from a podcast interview that it’s ideal to first remove your makeup THEN WASH YOUR FACE and wash it 2x in a row (gently) to get off all the makeup.     8) Add facials. I had never had a facial until last year. WHATTT?? Now that I get what facials can do for your skin, well I’m in. Facials are like personal trainers for your skin. They get out the bad stuff and add the good stuff and it’s true self-love and self-care at its best. I’m committed to doing facials 1-2x a month going forward, forever– it’s that impactful!

    9) Use good makeup.     My strong recommendations on what not to do to improve your adult acne situation: DO NOT GO ON THE PILL to solve your acne problems and DO NOT GO ON SPIRONOLACTONE to solve your acne problems. I’ll do a deep dive post on why this is sooo bad for you but it has to do with jacking up your hormones and destroying your health– trust me. Want to learn about how bad The Pill is for you? Read “Beyond the Pill” by Dr. Joleen Brighten. The side effects of spironolactone alone are reason enough to avoid it and the long-term side effects from manipulating your testosterone– trust me, you’ll regret it later. Don’t go there.

    Upgrade Your Daily Skincare Routine to Treat Hormonal Acne.

    Once you start realizing how much of a difference you can make in how your skin looks AND feels, you’ll realize that the time and investment is worth it. I’m really leveling up my skincare game and this year I plan to expand with some additional best practices and try out some new products and services. One thing I’m adding is Gua Sha– see the illustration above. You use a soft marble like tool– like the one below- and apply a good oil to your face first then you sweep the tool in those directions to improve lymphatic flow. And of course leveling up your at-home skincare and committing to a morning and evening routine-you will be amazed at how much you’ll see a difference.     In closing here are some of my favorite products (some already mentioned above) for treating hormonal acne. Note, while I say ‘treat’ I hope it goes without saying that no one product is guaranteed to eradicate one’s acne issues, it’s really a lot of trial and error but- investing in good products, makeup, skincare and best practices will garner great results over the long-term. 

    1) Wash your face with your hair pulled back– using this soft scrunchie and headband combo. This will allow you to focus heavily on your face without the hair getting in the way. 

    2) When your skin gets broken out — USE AN ICE ROLLER for relief and also to decrease inflammation. Don’t pick at your skin, ICE IT!

    3) As stated above– get yourself a solid skincare routine. I’ve been using Arbonne skincare for 15+ years and they have a lot of acne-focused products as well. Let’s talk and get you hooked up with some fantastic clean pure and beneficial products to beautify your skin.

    4) Satin pillowcases. If you want to go nutty get an entire set of luxury silk sheets. So worth the investment. 

    5) Read The Skincare Bible. Enough said.

    7) Do a Dead Sea Mud Mask once a week. It pulls out impurities in the skin and feels very spa at home– trust me. Don’t do it too often, you’ll over dry out the skin and cause breakouts!

    8) Try a facial steamer. Sometimes it’s the simple things that often work most effectively. I love taking a steam bath at the gym, so this is like a steam bath for your face. Drink in the moisture and open up those pores!

    Why You Should Try New Things

    Do you wonder how to get out of your COMFORT ZONE and start doing things differently? Do you find yourself bored or let down by your life that is too predictable because you always play it safe and THE SAME? I can relate, I used to be the same. If you want to get out of your comfort zone and start making decisions in all areas of your life that will change your future– for the better, tune in to learn how easy that can be! 

    I’ve always been a creature of habit — and in the past this has kept me from enjoying a lot of new experiences. I’m not sure when it was — but it certainly was in the past 10 years or so that I made a change. I stopped being so skeptical and doubtful about things, and started TRYING NEW THINGS in every area of my life. Instead of always eating the same things, I started trying new dishes, new restaurants, cooking different types of cuisines etc. Instead of always wearing my same rotation of nail polish colors every spring, summer and winter, I started mixing it up and trying new colors every time I went for a fill. Instead of sticking with the same workouts I’ve always done for the past decade, I started adding NEW ones and doing programs vs. just picking out random dvds. 

    The bottom line is– once I started embracing this idea of “I’ll try anything!”– my life changed so much more for the better and I strongly encourage you to do the same, if you’ve been “playing it safe” like me in the past. I’m guessing once you read this post you might see that there are areas in your life where you could enjoy spicing things up a bit! 

    The Top 10 New Additions to My Life: Things I Didn't Want to Try But Now Am Rather Obsessed With!

    Keep in mind, that these things I’m sharing with you are not in any particular order. Honestly this subject came into my head this morning as I was applying my makeup (one of the changes I’ll mention below)…and I started to think about so many of the new things in my life that used to not be a part of my life 5-7 years ago. I’m so grateful I branched out and became more adventurous!! Life is far more fun with diversity in all areas, trust me. 

    Per the selfie above– one of the things I was sooo skeptical to try was CURLING MY HAIR. My experience as a younger woman told me- that my straight hair would never hold a curl but- I did some YouTube watching and found out I may be able to do this! It’s all about NOT putting the oil stuff in your hair that you use when you use a straight iron and want to get those smooth ends– the oil (think CHI products) will not work with curls staying in place. What I learned works is using mousse (yes mousse) and products that have sea salt in them or are made specifically for CURLS or creating curls-– then letting my hair air dry- then using a wand curling iron to create the waves/curls (I started buying all L’Ange hair tools and have been very happy). Then I add a texturizing product like this and “scrunch” the curls. It’s sticky but it’s worth it! Then you spray the hell out of the curls and LEAVE THEM. You don’t brush them out for a while and then what I do is tease them and then spray them again. It’s a lot more time to do this but I’m actually surprised: my bone straight hair will hold curls for days!! Crazy! My favorite hair spray is still- after 30+ years — Paul Mitchell!! 

    Next up in the same category of beauty would be LASHES. I never wore fake lashes until recently and now I’m a fan– I was so intimidated to apply them so I avoided it like the plague!! but frankly I often just got tired of taking off the mascara at night when I’d wash my face….so I stocked up on some lashes and glue and started practicing and wearing them every day and I got hooked fast. They– like getting your eyebrows waxed and shaped- it’s amazing the difference it makes in your face having beautiful bigger dark luxurious lashes!! It’s crazy! I think my next level up may be getting the semi-permanent ones done. 😉

    Of course if you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know that my most recent biggest change was GOING KETO. I was so skeptical about the Keto Diet and did not want to do it at all but I’m so glad I listened to my doctor because: going keto changed my body and my life! 36 inches down and 30 LBS lighter! OMG, now the exogenous ketones I take 2x a day (which give me crazy energy, help me focus, quash my cravings and virtually eliminate my appetite between meals) are FREAKING DELICIOUS!     You want to know what’s boring? Eating the same thing all the time. I used to do this -ALWAYS! I’d discover something I loved and eat it all the time over and over again. While there’s nothing wrong with having some favorites– our bodies and taste-buds will respond favorably to a diversified diet. And– if you are like me, you’ll enjoy learning about other cultures as you start to branch out and make new cuisines from different countries. 

    I used to eat the same types of food over and over. And if someone asked me to try something, I’d often say “I don’t like x kind of food” or “I don’t do spicy” etc. Well now, my husband and I have discovered soooo many different kinds of foods from different cultures that we love–because — HE FIRST- then me, BRANCHED OUT and started going for it trying new things. When I first met my husband, he’d never had sushi, or an acai bowl or overnight oats or a bagel with cream cheese and lox or- well I could go on and on. But he just DOVE IN AND TRIED everything- it inspired me to start doing the same. He’s the one who got me into more SPICY FOOD– heck, I live in Texas now after all, where they put jalapenos on everything: now so do I!! Both my man and I enjoy watching YouTube or searching Pinterest or just stumbling on a recipe in one of our magazines that is totally different than anything we’ve made before– and we GO FOR IT. We’ve made some crazy great new recipes even just over the past month or so that I’m now adding to my KETO COOKBOOK! Check these out:

    Generally speaking- the biggest thing NEW with food for me is trying new cuisines. We now love Middle Eastern Food and I’m buying all kinds of Middle Eastern and Lebanese cookbooks. I used to ONLY make/cook Italian dishes — BORING!! I also really like learning about all the different kinds of flavor combos in Asian cooking– WOW. Secondly, I now love making all our dishes SPICY!! I add Sriracha to everything and Jalapenos as well! Bring on the heat!

    A food category new habit but not about eating- more about health/diet is- APPLE CIDER VINEGAR. I had heard for years about people taking ACV daily for gut health but never pursued trying it until I read the AMAZING BOOK – The Glucose Revolution. OMG lifechanger especially if you are like me with insulin resistance. In this book she talks about ACV being a hack you can use to help significantly lessen the insulin response from higher carb foods you eat. If you consume a TBS of ACV in water prior to or within 10-20 minutes of a meal with carbs in it, that ACV is going to significantly dampen that carb impact. Then, if you go for a walk (or do strength training) within 70 minutes of eating– your body will use the glucose from the carbs and burn it during the activity instead of it going right to your liver where it would be stored as fat– if you did not do the exercise. Steve and I now take Bijan the dog for a walk every night after dinner, about 20 minutes. And I do the ACV thing around every carb meal and I’m telling you I NOTICE a difference!!! Amazing!! Then I bought these METAL STRAWS because it was recommended to not drink the ACV water straight– but I’d heard people talking about getting metal straws previously and I thought: WHY?? Well now that I have them, I’m obsessed.  I love drinking out of a straw and it makes me drink more water/ketones etc. which is good for hydration. You can drink faster out of a straw than gulping down liquid the other way.

    When it comes to my fitness game, I have (FINALLY) and am branching out. I will say that my first experience branching out- doing something that intimidated me was back when I first started training with a personal trainer when I lived in Chicago. Both my trainer Jay and then my trainer from Gold’s Gym in Austin were so impactful in my life. As I type this I’m like oh man I want to do that again (one of my problems, wanting to do all the things all the time). I was intimidated to train with a trainer thinking I had to have a perfect body to do so. DUMB. That’s what a trainer does is help get you where you want to GO! More recently when I was doing my reverse diet prior to going keto and losing weight, I had to scale BACK my training- I had been over dieting and over training for so long, my body needed the opposite of that. It needed food and nourishment (reverse diet) and less intense training. I was told no high intensity cardio, only walking and for weight training, just nothing that would jack up my heart rate. So slow steady lifting or – yoga/barre. I began testing out some barre type classes and ended up being drawn to one I’d always made fun of before- Tracy Anderson workouts. Boy did I get taught a lesson! Once I signed up for a 2 week trial and tried a BEGINNER WORKOUT, I got my BUTT KICKED. Her workouts are INTENSE– totally different, totally not what you are used to if you are a gym rat but WOW. And the music is fantastic! I became an addict and then THAT opened my eyes to branching out and just being open to all kinds of fitness instead of pigeon holing myself into a small corner saying “I only do this type of training”– why? Because that’s what I used to do- but why does what we used to do have to dictate what we will do? HMMMM. I’m also planning to do ANOTHER THING that was TOTALLY NOT MY VIBE previously and that is — JOIN local studios and start going to classes. There are some really fun new health club concepts here locally and some Barre/Yoga studios and then some spin/yoga/hot everything fusion places……it’s time for me to stop isolating myself and only training at home– that’s my next step. What about YOU? How can you branch out and diversify? I also recently started doing a BEACHBODY PROGRAM-– 30-Day Breakaway> it’s a running and strength training program and the reason that’s a big deal is, I’ve never done programs before. I have always loved Beachbody workouts but I never did the PROGRAM. I’d always just mix and match my workout dvds and do whatever I felt like, well now I’m diving in and embracing change: doing a PROGRAM from start to finish. I’m digging it!
